About these holidays
Republic Day
The anniversary of the founding of the republic — varies by country.
Marks the adoption of a republican constitution or the end of a monarchy. Observed in India, Italy, Turkey, Portugal and a number of other states.
Lunar New Year Holiday
The days following Lunar New Year's Day, extended each year by government announcement.
The additional days of the new year break. The statutory minimum is three, but the Executive Yuan publishes an adjusted calendar each year that bridges the holiday into neighbouring weekends, compensated by designated working Saturdays.
Lunar New Year's Eve
The last day of the twelfth lunar month, falling in late January or February.
The reunion dinner on New Year's Eve is the most important meal of the Taiwanese year, and the night when families gather regardless of how far they have moved. A public holiday in its own right, ahead of the new year days that follow.
Lunar New Year's Day
The first day of the first lunar month, between 21 January and 20 February.
The start of the lunar year and the longest holiday Taiwan observes. Days one to three are statutory, and the government routinely extends the break with adjusted working weekends, producing stretches of seven to nine days.
Peace Memorial Day
28 February.
Commemorates the 228 Incident of 1947, when a crackdown on protests began the period of martial law known as the White Terror. Made a public holiday in 1997, fifty years after the event, and a day of official remembrance rather than celebration.
Children's Day
1 June across the post-Soviet states and much of Asia; other dates elsewhere.
Honours children. A public holiday in a number of countries, and in China a day off for children under thirteen rather than for everyone.
Tomb Sweeping Day
Around 4–5 April, at the Qingming solar term.
Families visit ancestral graves to clean the headstones and make offerings. In Taiwan the date is fixed to 5 April in some years to coincide with the anniversary of Chiang Kai-shek's death, and it is commonly combined with Children's Day into a longer spring break.
Labor Day
1 May in most countries; the first Monday of September in the United States and Canada.
The workers' holiday. Almost everywhere it falls on 1 May; in the United States and Canada it was deliberately placed in September to avoid the associations of May Day.
Dragon Boat Festival Holiday
A day added to the Dragon Boat Festival so the break runs with the weekend.
An extra day off bridging the Dragon Boat Festival into the adjacent weekend.
Dragon Boat Festival
The fifth day of the fifth lunar month, in May or June.
Duanwu commemorates the poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in 278 BC. Marked by dragon boat races and by eating zongzi, glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
Teachers' Day
5 October in many countries; other dates elsewhere.
Honours teachers. Where it is a day off it is usually limited to schools rather than the wider economy.
Teachers' Day Holiday
28 September, the traditional birthday of Confucius.
Teachers' Day honours educators on the date traditionally given as Confucius's birthday, marked by a dawn ceremony at the Taipei Confucius Temple.
Mid-Autumn Festival
The fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, in September or October.
The harvest moon festival, marked by mooncakes and family gatherings. Taiwan has its own addition to the tradition: outdoor barbecues, a custom that began with a 1980s advertising campaign and stuck.
National Day
Varies by country — a founding, unification, or constitutional anniversary.
The principal patriotic holiday of a country that does not frame its national day as independence — a founding, unification, revolution or monarch's day depending on the state.
Day off for Taiwan's Retrocession Day
25 October.
Retrocession Day marks the handover of Taiwan from Japanese to Republic of China administration in 1945. Restored as a public holiday in 2025 after decades as a commemorative day only.
Taiwan's Retrocession Day
25 October.
Marks the handover of Taiwan from Japanese to Republic of China administration in 1945. Restored as a public holiday in 2025 after decades as a commemorative day only.
Constitution Day
The anniversary of the adoption of the constitution — varies by country.
Marks the adoption of a country's constitution. A major public holiday in Norway, Poland, Denmark, Japan, Mexico and South Korea, among others.
